Our story

Adanna O:

To encapsulate my "why" in one word—or rather, in one person—it's God. My why is deeply tied to my faith in God. Since growing in my relationship with Christ, I have always been drawn to missionary work and deeply moved by the selflessness of individuals who give themselves completely in service to others. I knew in my heart that this was my calling and purpose: to have a heart posture of service and to embrace selflessness in a world filled with misfortune.

In 2021, I was eager to participate in a mission trip on the ground. I researched different trips online and found a European-owned volunteer program focused on a children's project in Ghana. Volunteering in Ghana was an incredible experience. I felt at home, the children brought joy to my life, and the people in the community felt like family. As a first-generation immigrant, I could relate to my people well and felt a connection that I didn’t have all my life. During my time there, I had a moment of prayer and felt confirmation from God that I was exactly where I was meant to be. He gave me the scripture James 1:27, which was a profound moment for me.

Reflecting on my experience, I became deeply appreciative of the bravery of my parents, who risked their lives to bring opportunity to their children in an unfamiliar land. While they did everything they could with what they had, a disconnect remained. I realized the importance of bridging this gap and reconnecting with our roots in Africa—a land rich with creative, strong, business-minded, resourceful, and dynamic individuals. I thought to myself, if every first-generation immigrant had the opportunity to feel as I did, we would be unstoppable. We do not need saving from those who look nothing like us; God has instilled in us everything we need to make our home as beautiful as possible. What we need is the bridge to remember who we are and where we come from. This realization inspired the creation of Pure Religion: to be the bridge that fills this gap, empowering communities in Africa to embrace their identity and potential.

Josephine E:

I've always prayed for God to equip me to be a resource and to serve on a larger scale, even when I didn’t know what that would look like. Growing up as a child of immigrant parents, I watched my family fight for over 30 years to remain in the U.S., unable to return to Nigeria. That long separation limited my ability to connect with my roots.

It wasn’t until I finally traveled internationally that something shifted. That journey reignited a passion in me—to serve beyond the borders I’d known. It reminded me that this calling is bigger than me; it’s kingdom-driven. It gave me a deeper understanding of my parents' sacrifice and revealed the richness, beauty, and potential of Africa, despite the many challenges it faces.

Africa is a continent filled with abundant resources and incredible people, yet access to those resources and essential care often remains out of reach. Pure Religion was born from this realization —to be a resource and a light across Africa. It’s about helping others like me—those with similar stories, find their way back home to build legacies and create lasting impact.
